AFGHANISTAN: HEROIN FLOW CONTINUES
Afghanistan remains the world's top supplier of heroin to Europe and
produces most of the opium-based drugs consumed in Central Asia, a senior
United Nations official said. Despite efforts by the new government to cut
down on opium production, Afghanistan still supplies 70 to 90 percent of
heroin that reaches Europe, and supplies about nine million addicts in the
world, said Bernard Frahi, head of the United Nations Drug Control Program.
