HEROIN TRIAL BACKED AT SA DRUG SUMMIT

There has been overwhelming support at South Australia's anti-drugs summit
for a prescription heroin trial for hardcore addicts.

The issue was one the Premier Mike Rann did not want on the agenda.

Delegates wanted the summit to look at holding a heroin prescription trial
for hardcore users who fail other drug treatment programs.

At the taking of the vote, there were only a few who opposed the call.

State Democrats leader Mike says he hopes the Government will be bold
enough to conduct a heroin trial in Adelaide.

But Premier Mike Rann says while he likes 90 per cent of what has come out
of the summit, not everything will be adopted.

"This is not a Parliament, the Parliament of SA and the Government have not
devolved our sovereign rights as elected representatives to this group of
delegates," Mr Rann said.

The recommendations will now be looked at more closely by the Government's
new Social Inclusion Unit, which is headed by a Catholic priest.

The summit has also urged a 24-hour drug rehabilitation clinic specifically
for Adelaide's Aborigines, as well as a ban on tobacco and alcohol
advertising aimed at young people.
