SAVE KIDS FROM SALVIA BY LEGALIZING POT
Re: Hallucinogenic herb being abused by young people (The Journal, April 8).
Salvia divinorum is an example of how prohibition causes the "gateway
effect." Because commonly used soft drugs are prohibited, people have
explored legal alternatives, like salvia. Unless we want every
teenager in Canada to try salvia, we should ignore it and fix the
problem that is leading people to it.
Ending drug prohibition, providing a regulated framework for
responsible use of marijuana and other soft drugs, similar to the way
we currently deal with substances like caffeine and alcohol, would
push salvia off the shelf and out of our consciousness.
