MAN WHO WOUNDED DEPUTIES ALLEGEDLY MADE POLICE THREATS

The Auburn man who wounded three King County sheriff's deputies on Sunday
before being fatally shot outside a suspected methamphetamine lab was being
investigated for allegedly making threats against "one or more deputies" in
the department, according to a sheriff's spokesman.

An investigation of Gary Dean Burow, 34, was under way when he drove up to
a Maple Valley-area house on a motorcycle and fired at least six shots at
narcotics detectives who had served a search warrant several hours earlier,
said Sgt. Greg Dymerski.

The detectives returned fire and shot Burow more than once in the head.
Three detectives were wounded and remained hospitalized yesterday:

* A 29-year-old, five-year veteran in the Kenmore precinct, who was shot in
the abdomen and left elbow. He was in serious condition, under heavy
sedation, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He will undergo several
more surgeries, said a hospital spokeswoman.

* A 35-year-old, five-year veteran in the Kenmore precinct, who was shot in
the midtorso and upper legs. He was in satisfactory condition at Harborview
and will remain at the hospital through the end of this week, the
spokeswoman said.

* A 36-year-old, four-year veteran in the Maple Valley precinct, who was
shot in the right foot. He was in satisfactory condition at Valley Medical
Center in Renton and will undergo surgeries to repair bones that are
"splintered," according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Dymerski declined to comment on the nature of the alleged threats or what
might have prompted them.

Burow's family has said that Burow was upset after a sheriff's deputy
fatally shot his 17-year-old stepson last New Year's Eve after a car chase.
Dymerski said there is no evidence of Burow being motivated by a grudge
against police.

Police had been looking for Burow since November, when he failed to show up
in court after he was convicted of second-degree assault with a firearm. He
was facing almost four years in jail for an armed standoff with Auburn
police after an altercation involving his girlfriend.

Police are still trying to connect Burow with the suspected meth lab. Black
Diamond police Cmdr. Chris Hurst said Burow and some of his associates were
known meth users.

Meanwhile, county authorities said charges would be filed today in King
County Superior Court against the 35-year-old man and the 42- year-old
woman who lived at the house. Both have a history of making and selling
meth, according to court records.

Dymerski said an inquest will likely be ordered into Burow's shooting.

Inquests, which follow officer-involved shootings, are fact-finding
investigations held before a judge. They are intended as a public airing of
the details of the shootings: who fired the fatal shot, who died and the
circumstances, among other things.

In this case, no timetable has been established because the investigation
into the shooting is not complete, Dymerski said.

Meanwhile, police yesterday revealed more information about Burow and two
stepsons.

"Basically, they were one never-ending criminal event," said Hurst, of
Black Diamond. "That was our experience with them: moving money, breaking
into cars, stealing things. It was all centered around using and buying and
making drugs."

Hurst said his department made more than 100 contacts with members of the
family in the past two years.

It included an incident last July, when Burow's stepson, David Harrison,
tried to blow up a Black Diamond police car with a sophisticated homemade
bomb. He is serving a three-year sentence.

The other stepson, Robert Harrison, stole a car in Federal Way and fled to
Auburn.

He was shot and killed after driving over an officer's foot during an
ensuing confrontation.
