NIGERIA: CRIME-FIGHTING AID FROM U.S.

The United States will provide $3.3 million in law enforcement and
drug-control assistance to Nigeria, the American Ambassador, Howard Jeter,
said. The country, Africa's most populous, is plagued by violent crime and
politically motivated thuggery and has become a center for heroin smuggling
and international fraud. Mr. Jeter said the money would be used to train
drug officials, equip the police to fight financial crimes and human
trafficking and provide modern facilities to government agencies involved
with law enforcement and drug control.
