ILL WIND FOR DRUG WAR
Interdiction Efforts Less Popular Abroad
In Bolivia, Evo Morales, an Aymara Indian coca farmer who fiercely opposes
U.S.-led efforts to eradicate coca production, has come in second to former
President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada. Morales is unlikely to be chosen
president in the upcoming jockeying among parties in the Bolivian congress,
but his strong showing suggests substantial opposition to U.S. drug war
policies.
Will the U.S. take that into account in the future? Don't bet on it, based
on Washington's rhetoric so far.
