DRUG IS STILL ILLEGAL
Police will still crack down on cannabis use, Gloucestershire's Chief
Constable has warned.
Tim Brain's statement came after Home Secretary David Blunkett yesterday
announced cannabis would be downgraded to a class C drug.
It means that simple possession, while still a criminal offence, may not
warrant an automatic arrest.
But Mr Brain insisted: "Cannabis has been reclassified, not decriminalised.
The possession of cannabis remains a criminal offence for which a fine of
UKP2,500 and a term of imprisonment of three months maximum can be imposed."
