OFFICERS GUILTY IN DRUG CASE
WINSTON-SALEM - A Davidson County sheriff's lieutenant who pleaded guilty
to drug conspiracy charges was sentenced Friday to 27 years behind bars.
Lt. David Scott Woodall was the first of four law enforcement officers and
two others expected to be sentenced Friday in federal court on
drug-conspiracy and extortion charges. Also Friday, Archdale police Sgt.
Christopher Shetley was sentenced to 2 years and 10 months in prison and
Marco Aurelio Acosta-Soza to 5 years and 7 months.
"I realize that I've ruined my life and the lives of a lot of other
people," Woodall told Judge William Osteen.
He said his problems began in 1999, when he began using steroids. "On the
one hand, I hated myself, but I didn't know how to get out," Woodall said.
"I wanted to die."
Osteen told Woodall that his actions had tarred all law enforcement officers.
In December 2001, state and federal agents arrested Woodall, Lt. Douglas
Edward Westmoreland and Sgt. William Monroe Rankin, all of the Davidson
County Sheriff's Office. Agents also arrested Shetley and two others, Wyatt
Kepley and Acosta-Soza.
The men pleaded guilty in March to various charges of conspiracy to
distribute drugs.
As of late May, Davidson County District Attorney Garry Frank had dismissed
drug charges against more than 30 people because these deputies were
involved in the cases.
