POT-SMOKING EX-SOLDIER NOT TYPICAL

To the editor:

In printing the story Former Peacekeeper Fights Cannabis Rap in the July 17
Daily News, you have reached a new low. Although the image of a soldier in
uniform using illicit drugs may make for a sensational front page, it is
hardly representative of all members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Herbert Wilson's case for the liberalization of Canada's marijuana laws has
nothing to do with his service in the Forces. Back injuries occur to
millions of people, not just to soldiers. That is the first of many glaring
errors in this story.

Wilson did not win the Nobel Peace Prize individually. He was but one of
many thousands of UN peacekeepers worldwide who were honoured for their
service in the name of peace. As for the Canadian Peacekeeping Service
Medal, it is granted to all Canadian Forces personnel who have served in
peace operations around the globe. I myself, as well as thousands of
others, have been awarded this medal.

This blatant misreporting serves only to underscore your pronounced disdain
for members of the Canadian Armed Forces.
