DRUG ABUSE RESISTANCE EDUCATION
Honorable Mention in the Junior Reporter category of the Write-On Contest
Julie Penner, grade 6 Harry Gray Elementary
D.A.R.E. is the program which Harry Gray Elementary students in grade six
participate in once a week. On every Wednesday from about 12:30 till 3:20
p.m., it is taught by the police officer Constable Ann Brinnen inside the
school.
In this program the grade six students learn to resist drugs and abuse, how
to say no and how to deal with different pressures and stress. Since there
is a lot to learn, D.A.R.E. will take about 18 weeks. On the teacher's desk
is a decorated container for any questions the students might have. Writing
definitions, students also answer questions in their D.A.R.E. books.
Students perform skits in front of the class and have group discussions as
well.
Ashley Warnock announced, 'I think D.A.R.E. is a great opportunity for kids
because it is fun, educational and it teaches you to resist drugs and abuse.'
D.A.R.E. really is an excellent program to teach students about drugs. If
you stay drug free you'll also be staying healthier.
