COCAINE BAG TRAIL BAGS NIGERIAN

GOSWILL Emenike of Nigeria faces the death penalty after he was caught with
about seven million pesos worth of high-grade cocaine.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and NBI Director Reynaldo Wycoco led other
government officials in presenting Emenike before the media at the NBI
headquarters Wednesday morning.

Authorities seized 700 grams of cocaine from Emenike, 29, of Queen's Road,
Project 8, Quezon City. It was the first successful "drug controlled
delivery operation" done in the Philippines, according to the President.

Lawmen began to follow the suspect's trail after United States Customs
officials seized a UPS express parcel--an overnight bag bound for the
Philippines--at the Miami, Florida International Airport on July 19.

Wycoco said the package originated from a Maria Nilsa Claure in Cochabamba,
Bolivia. The cocaine was concealed inside the bag's false bottom.

Eight days after the package was seized, the US Drug Enforcement
Administration asked the NBI, the customs bureau, and local anti-narcotics
officials to conduct "a controlled delivery operation" to determine who was
involved in the cocaine importation to the Philippines.

Lawyer Edmund Arugay, NBI-National Capital Region chief, said the package
was intended for a Jorge Nmadu, also of Queens Road, Project 8. Police said
Emenike rented the apartment when Jorge allegedly left in 1998.

On the evening of July 29, two NBI agents acted as UPS employees and
delivered the package to Emenike, Wycoco said
