COPTER ON EVACUATION MISSION CRASHES IN REBEL ZONE; 6 DEAD

BOGOTA -- A helicopter crashed while on an army medical evacuation mission
in a rebel zone of southern Colombia, killing six people, the army said Friday.

The Huey helicopter, given by the United States to Colombia to fight drug
trafficking, crashed around midnight Thursday between the towns of Solita
and Valparaiso, a jungle region 260 miles south of Bogota. One person survived.

The army said the cause of the crash was being investigated. Initial
reports said poor weather may have been a factor. There was no indication
that rebel gunfire was involved.
