POT LAW

To the editor:

I hope the endorsement of the marijuana initiative by the Nevada
Conference of Police and Sheriffs does not represent the view of the
majority of the group's 3,000 members, and that those members will go
to the polls in November and vote no on Question 9 ("Police back
legalization measure," Aug. 7).

To NCOP President Andy Anderson: As a police officer, your job was to enforce
the laws as written. If the arrests didn't get to court, that wasn't your
responsibility. That falls on someone higher up than you. You did your job, and
that's what we expect from our law enforcement.

Just because a murder suspect never gets to court because some clever
attorney is able to prostitute the legal system, do you want to stop
arresting murder suspects and legalize murder? If the marijuana
initiative is approved by the voters, are you willing to take on the
additional burden of heavier drug use caused by marijuana being the
first stepping stone?

Do you realize Nevadans for Responsible Law Enforcement is really a
Washington, D.C., organization? Read the papers in Secretary of State
Dean Heller's office and learn the truth about who is behind this
initiative. It appears this organization has the ultimate goal of
legalizing all drugs nationwide. Is that what the Nevada Conference of
Police and Sheriffs wants?

I say shame on NCOP for betraying the people of Nevada.
