ARREST MADE IN BURNABY MURDER

An arrest was made this week in connection with the mysterious murder of a
Burnaby couple seven years ago.

Robert Bruce Moyes, 47, was charged with seven drug-related slayings,
including the 1995 double homicide of Eugene and Michele Uyeyama of Burnaby.
Moyes is also alleged to have killed five others at an Abbotsford rural
property in 1996.

He appeared Thursday in Abbotsford Provincial Court on the Abbotsford murder
charges and will appear in Vancouver Provincial Court to face the Burnaby
charges.

At the time of his arrest, Moyes was being held in a B.C. correction
facility serving a sentence for parole violations, including a 1997
conviction in Burnaby for driving while disqualified.

Investigators suspect he committed both the Burnaby and Abbotsford killings
while on day patrol. At the time he was serving a life sentence for
robberies committed in 1987 and 1988.

Police said Moyes may face further charges and other individuals may also be
charged with the seven murders. Police from Abbotsford, Vancouver, the RCMP
and the Organized Crime Agency worked together on the 20-month
investigation.

The Uyeyama couple was murdered Dec. 21, just two months after being
married. They were found strangled in a rented luxury home in north Burnaby.
According to news reports at the time, both had been tortured before being
killed. A fire had been set in the home, located at 5711 Highland Drive, to
destroy evidence. The fire was contained to the room the couple were found
dead in.

Gasoline was likely used as an accelerant. Burnaby RCMP later found a
four-liter gas container at the scene.

Eugene, 35, was reported as being a police informant. It was speculated he
was involved in Lower Mainland cocaine trafficking and arrested for
possession in an east Vancouver raid, before becoming an informant.

Michele, 30, was not believed to be involved in the drug trade.
