CONCERT DRUG BUST FIGURES RELEASED

269 Marijuana Citations Issued during Reunion of Dead Fans

Concert-goers at last weekend's reunion of surviving Grateful Dead members
surprised people with their good behavior at Alpine Valley, but the two-day
festival did generate drug seizures, as well as citations and arrests in
connection with drug-related offenses.

Among the totals released late last week by the Walworth County Sheriff's
Department's drug enforcement unit were: 269 county citations for marijuana
possession, which usually means a $407 fine for less than an ounce; 80
arrests for 132 state violations, which carry heavier penalties than county
citations; and 10 people charged with possessing hallucinogenic mushrooms
and referred to the district attorney.

Police seized more than 51 pounds of marijuana with a street value of about
$40,000, as well as 7,300 doses of LSD, 8.8 grams of liquid LSD, 10 pounds
of hallucinogenic mushrooms, 9 grams of heroin, 82 grams of hashish, 6.3
grams of cocaine and a tank of nitrous oxide, according to the department.

The biggest bust came Sunday when drug unit officers observed people
entering and leaving a converted touring bus in the parking lot. Officers
raided the bus and seized 7 pounds of mushrooms, 7 pounds of marijuana and
56 grams of hashish.

Two people from California and five from Oregon were arrested.

A 4-year-old girl was on the bus at the time of the raid. She was turned
over to Walworth County human services personnel until her mother was located.

Two officers were injured in that arrest. One was knocked unconscious when
he was struck in the head with a knee, and the other suffered a bruised
thigh and scrapes to a knee and palm, according to the department.
