MOYES CHARGED IN MASS MURDER

Almost six years after the worst mass murder in Abbotsford, police have
finally charged a suspect, with more arrests expected in the near future.

Abbotsford Police said yesterday Robert Bruce Moyes, 47, has been charged
with seven counts of first degree murder for a quintuple slaying at 32857
Harris Rd. in September 1996 and the murder of a Burnaby couple in December
1995.

All slayings had links to the drug trade.

Abbotsford Const. Shinder Kirk could not say when further charges were
expected, or how many people are being eyed.

The man charged in the case is no stranger to the justice system, with a
lengthy criminal record - 36 charges - dating back to 1974.

He is serving a life sentence for robbery at an undisclosed prison,
corrections officials confirmed yesterday. That sentence began in 1988, but
at the time of the mass murder he was on day parole.

It is unknown when Moyes became the focus of the investigation, but Kirk
said a 20-month joint probe between the Abbotsford Police, RCMP, Vancouver
Police Department and Organized Crime Agency of B.C. finally broke the case
