JACKETS SET FOR NEW SEASON
Rockmart football fans are fast picking up on the program that new head
coach David Ruff is implementing as he steps quickly into a program that
hopefully will provide a defense against drugs for the Yellow Jackets.
At this period, prep football is becoming more and more important to
schools throughout America and the young men are working to prepare for at
least a 10-game season. Coach Duff has moved his squad into the "One Way 2
Play," a national program sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
This is a completely different method to prepare for the upcoming season.
The program was created to educate athletes on the dangers of drugs and
alcohol. The players voluntarily sign up for the program saying they will
play drug free throughout the year.
Coach Duff, who accepted the Rockmart post earlier this year, brought the
program to Rockmart from Hixon, TN, where he had instituted the program for
the past five years. "The program is completely voluntary," Duff said "The
guys, have been very positive about it as we enter the new season."
Rockmart had 100 percent of its team sign commitment cards to the program
during camp.
Every Thursday before practice, the players will gather into groups and
answer a series of questions before their teammates. "The only people the
players have to answer to are themselves," Duff said. "They have to be
honest with one another as a team." The program is designed to teach the
players self-respect and teamwork.
The players will be required to stay away from all alcohol and drug use
throughout the year. Rockmart football players will wear patches on their
jerseys throughout the year and tee shirt to school on Thursdays with the
"One Way 2 Play" logo on them.
