DRUGS ARE A MENACE

Re: Cynthia Tucker's column titled "Child poses no menace" (Other Opinions,
Aug. 13), How can Ms. Tucker think that anyone, regardless of age or race,
who is carrying 87 packets of cocaine, is hardly a menace to society?

She should try telling that to the numerous victims of robberies committed
by drug users who will be desperate to obtain money to purchase this
cocaine. Or she can tell it to the innocent bystanders who are killed in
the shoot-out when a drug deal goes bad. Or to the family of the drug user
who may be on the verge of reform, until this new shipment of drugs
conveniently arrives at his door.

She cannot tell me this 12-year-old boy did not know the drugs he was
carrying were illegal. He chose to break the law.
