OFFICER IN SHOOTING NAMED

MUSTANG -- The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation released the name
Tuesday of a deputy who fatally shot a man running from drug task force
officers Monday afternoon. Canadian County sheriff's Deputy Sgt. Steve
Carrell, 33, was a member of a drug task force investigating illegal drug
activity that tried to pull over a car at about 5:50 p.m. Monday in Mustang.

Canadian County Sheriff Lewis Hawkins told The Oklahoman on Monday that
after the driver tried to elude the deputy, the driver drove into a ditch
and got stuck in the 400 block of S Ebeling Drive.

Kevin W. Hofmaier, 25, got out of the car, which also had a man and woman
inside, and ran, Hawkins said. Shaun Daugherty, 26, and Rebekah Rios, whose
age is not known, were identified as the passengers by OSBI spokeswoman Kym
Koch.

Carrell told Hofmaier to halt after identifying himself. Hofmaier then
brought his hands from behind his back and held them together, which
Carrell thought to be a weapon, Hawkins said.

Carrell then fired and hit Hofmaier, who was taken by helicopter to OU
Medical Center and pronounced dead on arrival.

A weapon has not been found, Koch said.

Hofmaier lived in Canadian County.

Daugherty and Rios were both being held in Mustang's jail and were booked
on a complaint of eluding police, an official said.

Hawkins said Carrell has not been suspended while the incident is being
investigated.

"It is my policy that I don't suspend them," he said.
