US TO HELP MILITARY GATHER INTELLIGENCE

The United States has set up a joint operations centre with the Third Army
to gather intelligence on the movement of drugs near the Burmese border.

The centre in Chiang Mai would be staffed by personnel from the US Central
Intelligence Agency and Drug Enforcement Administration, as well as
military officers from both countries, said Lt-Gen Udomchai Ongkhasingh,
Third Army chief.

Washington had also provided funding for two reconnaissance aircraft.

The US would later this year extend a further US$2.3 million (96.6 million
baht) to fund drug-suppression operations by Task Force 399, a source said.
