POLICE CRACK DOWN ON PIPES
ALMOST 1,000 illegal ice pipes being sold in stores across Melbourne
have been seized in the biggest haul of its kind. The raids were part
of a major crackdown on the ice scourge amid growing concern over an
epidemic. And State Government sources yesterday revealed a $120
million-plus 'War on Drugs' program would be a top priority in next
month's Budget.
Raids on three suburban traders netted 925 banned pipes, which can be
used to smoke methamphetamine (ice) crystals.
The action comes amid evidence emergency departments are struggling
to cope with the growing number of people needing treatment after
using ice, which causes violent rages, heart problems and psychosis.
The maximum penalty for selling banned goods is $60,000.
