HOME-INVASION BEATING REPELS EVEN DRUG DEALERS

BURNABY, B.C. -- The beating of an elderly couple in a home invasion was so
abhorrent that members of the illegal drug community are volunteering
information about the possible attacker.

"Even in the criminal society this type of crime is frowned upon," RCMP
Constable Phil Reid said Wednesday.

Yugi Kado, 98, and his 94-year-old wife, whose name has not been released,
were attacked in their home Saturday night.

They were found by one of their daughters the next morning.

Mr. Kado remains in the hospital with bleeding on the brain, a broken
orbital bone, a jaw broken in two places and the right side of his face
severely bruised, family members said. Police said his condition was serious
and there was concern he was getting worse.

His wife has a black eye and bruises on her face and leg. Relatives said she
has to be helped to walk.

Both of them were punched in the face by a man police have characterized as
a "cowardly creep."

Most of the six or seven calls received by police were from people involved
with illegal drugs, said Constable Reid, who added that the crime's
perpetrator fits the profile of a drug addict. "Obviously, we think it's
because they had to get their next fix," he said.

Although police said only a wallet and purse were taken from the home,
relatives said the inside of the home was a shambles.
