REPORT ON MARIJUANA LISTS THE DANGERS

Dear Editor - Regarding legalizing marijuana, I agree with J. Brown. The
Senate Committee on Illegal Drugs Cannabis summary report states that
"approximately 80,000 Canadians above age 16 could be excessive users."

Further, "Cannibas was involved in 70 per cent of the approximately 50,000
drug related charges in 1999." Marijuana (THC) stays in the body "as long as
30 days after use." Content of marijuana THC "varies between six per cent
and 31 per cent". THC affects the brain.

The report also states, "Canada would appear to have one of the highest
rates of cannabis use among youth", that is, between 12 and 18 years of age.

Further, "When smoked, cannabis (or marijuana) can have harmful effects on
the respiratory airways and is potentially cancerous." "Cannabis affects
psychomotor skills for up to five hours after use."

So, based on the quotes from the summary report alone, why would we want to
legalize marijuana? I have organized a petition to the government opposing
the legalization of marijuana.
