SUFFOLK COUNTY POLICE ARREST 4 OFFICERS IN DRUG INVESTIGATION

The Suffolk County Police have arrested four police officers and 10 others
on narcotics charges, the authorities said early this morning.

One of the officers was a New York City police sergeant, two were New York
State troopers, and one was a Suffolk police officer, said Officer Robert
Boden, a spokesman for the Suffolk County Police.

The investigation centered on the sale of cocaine, illegal steroids and
methamphetamine in Suffolk County. "From what I understand, it's been
months in the making," Officer Boden said.

The New York police sergeant, Robert Grettler, 34, was arrested Tuesday in
Suffolk County and later suspended, the authorities said. He was charged
with two counts of criminal sale of a controlled substance. Suffolk County
Police Officer Thomas B. Foley, 30, was charged with criminal sale of a
controlled substance and conspiracy. Both men pleaded not guilty and were
each held on $350,000 cash bail.

A state police dispatcher in Farmingdale said she could not confirm the
arrests of the troopers.

Officer Boden would not release details of the arrests, where they
occurred, or the names of the other suspects. The Suffolk County district
attorney, Thomas J. Spota, said more arrests are expected as the
investigation continues.
