Re: "Senators push to legalize pot: Health groups, police jeer panel's
report," Sept. 5

The adult who thinks there is no effect from a glass of wine is kidding
himself. Some of us are drunk after a glass of wine, some with greater
tolerance, appear to feel nothing, but are still affected to a lesser
degree. So it is with pot. For those with a tolerance, a puff or two is as
benign as that glass of wine. For those without, it is inebriating.

The words of Abraham Lincoln on the issue of alcohol say it well:

"Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a
species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of
reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and
makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes
a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."

Society is improved by its people, not its laws. People who are free to
choose continual drunkenness yet choose sobriety, are better people than
those whose choices are determined by the threat of police.
