BILLY ROGERS SPREAD YET MORE MISINFORMATION IN CL ARTICLE
I found Jimmy Boegle's article ["Just say no to marijuana initiative
rhetoric," Oct. 3] very interesting. I can't take up the space to comment
on most of the points, but I would like to correct one thing.
Billy Rogers contends that not one person asked to have their name removed
from the petition. That's yet more misinformation from Mr. Rogers.
Unfortunately my name was on the petition. I was rushing from a store, and
a petition circulator called after me, "Don't you want to support medical
marijuana?" I turned around and said, "We voted on that in 2000." She said,
"But it has to be voted on a second time, and this is it. We have to vote
again in November."
I didn't remember 1998, so I foolishly signed the petition. It was not
until the latter part of July that I discovered the truth - the real reason
behind the petition was to legalize three ounces of marijuana. Medical
marijuana was approved in 1998 and 2000. I went on the warpath! Lies to get
signatures on petitions prostitutes our system. I investigated Mr. Rogers
at the Secretary of State's office. I insisted that they find my name and
the name of the lady who lied to me, and I insisted that my name be
removed. But because the petitions had been validated, my name could not be
removed. However, I have a letter from Secretary of State Dean Heller
assuring me that he would write Mr. Rogers a letter stating that I did not
want my name on the petition.
I've talked to dozens of people who were lied to, just as I was, but they
knew it was too late to get their name removed from the petition.
If the lies had not been told by the circulators, they would not have
gotten sufficient names to qualify. That's the reason I'm fighting Mr.
Rogers. He has come into this state to deceive the people. If his
initiative should win (which it won't), he can fly back to Washington,
D.C., leaving behind the chaos, confusion and broken lives adversely
affected by the legalization.
