POLICE SWEEP NETS 343 CHARGES

Street level criminals were the targets of a 10-hour police blitz that
resulted in 343 charges. Peel police Street Crime Unit, with help from
officers around the region, targeted the areas around plazas, school and
other potential problem spots within the boundaries of Steeles Avenue,
Vodden Street, McLaughlin Road and Rutherford Road between 5 p.m. and 3
a.m. Friday.

The areas that police are called to most often were targetted.

Assaults, robberies, car thefts and drugs were the main focus, along with
other "lawless public behaviour" including loitering.

In all, 46 were arrested for drug offences, two weapons were seized, six
people were arrested on outstanding warrants, 41 criminal charges and 95
Highway Traffic Act charges were laid.

It is hoped the 10-hour blitz will reduce lawless behaviour and the demand
for police response, while at the same time improving the quality of life
for business owners, patrons and residents in the areas affected.

This is the third in a series of "street sweeps" Peel police have conducted
recently. Combined, the other two resulted in more than 300 charges.

The Street Crime Unit was formed three years ago to combat street level
crime. The unit's 16 officers use a variety of approaches to solving
neighbourhood problems. Anyone with concerns about street crime in their
neighbourhood is encouraged to call their police division at 905-453-3311.
