DOG KILLED IN BOTCHED DRUG RAID

LONDON, Ont. -- The officer who shot and killed a dog in a botched drug
raid last week is still on the job.

There is no evidence to warrant removing the officer from duty, said London
police Chief Brian Collins, who has launched an internal investigation.

The investigation will determine whether the mistake made when six officers
broke into the wrong apartment was human error or goes beyond that.

Marcie Carroll, 22, was at work when police raided her apartment and shot
and killed her six-year-old dog, Bear.

Her lawyer, Faisal Joseph, said he spoke to Collins, who yesterday promised
him a "full and transparent investigation."

Joseph said he is not angered the officer is still at work and is waiting
for all the facts to surface. Joseph said he is not sure whether Carroll
will pursue civil action.

"We have to wait for the investigation to go its natural course.

"Right now it appears a terrible mistake has occurred. My client wants to
know who's responsible for that mistake, what caused the mistake and if
someone is accountable for that."

Joseph said police should release the name of the officer responsible for
shooting Bear. He has also requested particulars of the search, including
the affidavit presented to the justice of the peace.

Today, Joseph is meeting with the investigator to provide photos and other
evidence he said proves the dog was shot from behind.

"My job is to make sure all the facts come out, whether they help or hurt
the London police department," he said.
