The incumbent Republican governor, Kenny Guinn, was so certain of a second
term that he stopped fund-raising and told donors who had pledged more than
$1 million to his campaign that they should keep their money. With broad,
bipartisan support, Mr. Guinn was easily re-elected.

Democrats had hoped to pick up the House seat in a newly created suburban
Las Vegas district. But their candidate, Dario Herrera, a telegenic county
commissioner and former University of Nevada football player, was battered
by television commercials questioning his ethics, and polls suggested he
would lose to State Senator Jon Porter, the Republican candidate.

Advocates for gay rights and legal marijuana were disappointed, with voters
approving a referendum to ban gay marriages and defeating another measure
that would have legalized possession of up to three ounces of marijuana.
