AN ADDICT'S VIEW: FIRST, YOU HAVE TO HIT BOTTOM

I am writing to all the bleeding hearts who talk about solutions for the
drug problems facing Vancouver. The best way to help a drug addict or
alcoholic is to stop catering to them and supporting their habits.

In the past, some cities like Montreal would test addicts for drugs. If
they were using, they would be disqualified for a welfare cheque. There was
an exodus of these sick addicts to Vancouver. I was one of them.

No one can help the addict but himself or herself. They are the only ones
that can make the decision to change. Well-meaning people who support them
in breaking the law or enabling them to continue using drugs with safe
sites in which to shoot up or congregate will eliminate the addict's
chances of survival -- their chance to hit bottom where they could make the
right choice.

I use a do-it-your-self system that has kept me alcohol and drug-free.
Years ago, in my teens, I started drinking and using drugs. My bottom came
when they scraped me off the streets of skid road with a burst ulcer. I had
found that living had become worse than dying. I was taken to St. Paul's
Hospital where I was given another chance at survival.

Now I am fully in control of my life. Only I can be responsible and
accountable for my thoughts and acts.
