FORGET THE EXCUSES
Ah, the letters regarding District Judge Thomas Gilbert; I'm certain his
defenders would like to see nothing more printed about his lack of personal
responsibility. These letters, both castigating and defending his actions,
are worth printing and reading. It shows that the residents of this area
feel it is important to voice their concerns.
I thought of an excellent article written by Anna Quindlen (in the Aug. 26
Newsweek magazine) titled "In Search of A Grown-Up." It points out that
when a couple give birth to a child they are instantly turned into role
models, right that very moment, whether they like it or not! The gist of
the article points out that way too many couples have "missed something
basic about the way a person ought to modify his or her behavior when
elevated to the position of parent."
Well, I believe that goes for judges also. Thomas Gilbert is a middle-aged
man who sought the public position as Judge. He is not a 20-year-old
college student, as Bill Clinton was, when he "didn't inhale."
If our judges can't comport themselves in a law-abiding manner, then who in
our society do our youth look to as role models? Forget the excuses and
second chances, this man is not a youth.
Let's make sure our elected officials act and live like adults who respect
the laws they are sworn to uphold. Those who have failed to do this should
resign their positions, be they legislators, judges, teachers, or law
enforcement officers.
