LOCAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL AWARENESS CONTEST CALLS ON CREATIVE KIDS

Creative kids are being invited to take part in a Literary Poster and Video
Contest being sponsored by the Elks and Royal Purple of Canada.

The contest is part of the organization's participation in drug and alcohol
awareness, and is open to students from kindergarten to grade 12.

Contestants are divided into age classes and choose to participate in
essay, video or poster categories with the theme being drug and alcohol
awareness.

This is the first time the contest has been held locally. First, second and
third prize winners will go on to Provincial and National competitions.
Local prizes in all categories are $25 for 1st place, $15 for 2nd and $10
for 3rd.

National grand prize winners will receive $1500 scholarships.

Entries may be submitted in either Official Language, must be original
works and become the property of the Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children.

Essays will be judged for spelling, grammar, sentence structure,
punctuation, paragraphing (20 %), and content, originality, creativity,
clarity adherence to essay format and overall impact (75%).

Posters will be judged for neatness and uniform lettering, effective use of
colour, content that conveys impact, creativity, clarity and adherence to
theme and poster size (11x17 or 12x18).

Videos must be no longer than seven minutes long and will be judged based
upon content, clarity, originality, clarity, quality of finished product
and impact of the message.

The deadline for entries is January 13, 2003. Entries may be dropped off at
the Observer office, 1 - 7026 Pioneer Ave. For more comprehensive
