DEPUTY'S SLAYING SHOULD IGNITE COMMUNITY ANGER
Shelby County sheriff's deputy George Selby, my friend, was shot to death
this week while he was serving a search warrant in an effort to get drugs
off our streets (Dec. 5 article).
He had a gorgeous wife and two beautiful daughters whom he left at home
almost every night to serve the citizens of Shelby County. He was not paid
large sums of money or given incredible job benefits, and was not shown the
respect he deserved. But he continued to do his work with a huge smile.
Since 1996, three Shelby County deputies have given up everything for us,
but no one seems to notice. A would-be burglar is shot by a man who is
trying to defend himself and his family, and there is a huge public outcry
for this "victim." Who will get angry about what happened to my friend?
Most Shelby Countians will never know what kind of person was lost this
week, but I know, and I can say that things will never be the same. I never
told him what a hero he was, but I pray he hears me now.
To keep my children and your children safe, he paid the ultimate price.
Would you give your life for people you have never met? The answer for most
is no, but the answer for George Selby was yes. When will we live in a
world where the murder of law enforcement officers makes the community
angry? For everyone's sake, I hope it is soon.
