TREAT ADDICTIONS WITH COMPASSION
On Dec. 9 the Commons committee on the non-medical use of drugs announced
that safe injection sites and needle exchange programs should be set up for
people addicted to drugs. Although controversial, I believe this
recommendation is long overdue. It is time we started treating people with
addictions with compassion and concern for their well-being. Studies of the
safe injection sites set up in Sweden have showed a huge decrease in the
spread of HIV among addicts, a drastic reduction in crime and overall
improved quality of life, says Eugene Oscapella of the Canadian Foundation
for Drug Policy. Further, if safe sites are available they can serve as a
pathway to recovery if the addict is ready. Many people do not realize the
shame and guilt attached to addiction. Bravo to this Commons committee for
their common-sense and humanitarian approach to addiction.
Gina Olofson,
(It certainly will be controversial.)
