CITY SUPPORTS DFZS WITH SIGNS
The City of Fernie has donated $300 for the purchase of signs and
installation of those signs for the Drug Free Zone initiative.
The Drug Free Zone is a partnership between the City of Fernie, School
District No. 5 (Southeast Kootenay) and the RCMP to have a drug free zone
around the schools so it's a safe learning environment.
Fernie RCMP Const. Mike Casault says they've already raised approximately
$900 for signs around Isabella Dicken and Max Turyk elementary schools as
well as Fernie Secondary.
"And we are requesting that the city purchase some signs to put around the
skateboard park," he said.
The signs will be set up around the schools and park for a two-block
radius. People caught in drug related crimes within the zone will be
subject to double or triple the fines and punishments for the same offences
outside the zone.
For more information on the DFZs or to make a donation to the program,
contact the Fernie RCMP office. Sponsorship for DFZ signs is also available.
