STUDENT, 13, ARRESTED FOR BRINGING POT-LACED BROWNIES TO SCHOOL

REDLANDS - It's not unusual for kids to gobble brownies, but these
brownies had a secret - and illegal - ingredient.

They used to be called space cakes. Now, they're called special
brownies. Either way, what makes them spacey and special is the
marijuana inside.

A 13-year-old boy baked a batch and brought them to Moore Middle
School on Thursday, where he sold them to fellow students, police said.

The boy was arrested on suspicion of felony possession of drugs for
sale, cited and released to his parents. The seven students who
admitted to buying and eating the pot-laced brownies were suspended.

Police were still trying to figure out where he got the marijuana,
how he learned to bake pot brownies and why he brought them to school.

Carl Baker, spokesman for the Redlands Police Department, said he
can't recall a space-cake case since the 1960s.

Although pot-laced baked goods may not be common on school campuses, drugs are.

"Unfortunately, drug use happens at all ages. They seem to start
younger and younger," Baker said.

The students who bought the special brownies are all 12 or 13.

A student told school resource officer Toshia Wells someone had
marijuana in a locker.

When she started asking around, students denied knowledge of that but
told her about the bake sale.

Some might wonder how a middle school student would have knowledge of
such things, but anyone with access to a computer is privy to it.

Hundreds of Web sites offer a plethora of pot-brownie recipes and
detailed instructions on how to make them.
