LANDLORDS NEED TO STEP UP
First and foremost, congratulations to the RCMP for its many recent
raids on crack shacks on Quince and adjoining streets. Great work.
Now, it's time for city council to get involved.
We should pass a bylaw similar to those in many other municipalities
that target grow-ops. Pass the cost of enforcement back on to the
unscrupulous landlords who rent these places out for illegal activities.
There is simply no way a landlord who knows his business cannot see
that the premises are used for such purposes; he can evict the
tenants for carrying on illegal activities. If he fails to do so, he
should be responsible for the costs of enforcement just as other
landlords pay the costs if a grow-op is found on their premises.
The police are doing their job. The landlords need to take
responsibility for their part of this problem.
