INEFFECTIVE DRUG WAR TACTICS
If the decades-long, multibillion-dollar war on (some) drugs has not solved
the heroin problem in Willimantic after 30 years, what difference would it
make to do more of the same: arrest users and dealers [Connecticut, Jan. 9,
"Willimantic Still Awaits Promised Aid"]?
According to The Courant article, state Rep. Walter Pawelkiewicz said that
the state should help Willimantic "so that 12 months from now, we're not
having the same conversation."
Unfortunately, unless the war on drugs ends, and drug addiction is treated
as a medical rather than a criminal problem, we will most definitely be
having the same conversation 12 months and 30 years from now.
