OVERSIZED WAR ON DRUGS
This is in response to the Rich Lowry column titled "Drug War Taking a
Ridiculous Turn."
His article hits the nail on the head. What I want to see most is reasoned
debate on this issue. Unfortunately, from Washington and the major media,
there is not enough.
Democrats and Republicans generally agree on this issue, and the media is
afraid to lose contact from Washington insiders, so they all avoid the
topic completely.
Scott Burns is correct when he says "no drug matches the threat posed by
marijuana" but not in the sense that he means. The threat is to the
oversized ONDCP budgets. Practically every government department at federal
and state levels receive extra drug-war funding, and local police
departments receive a significant amount of money from seizures.
As the cliche goes, they are addicted to the drug war and will not give it
up without a serious fight.
