MARIJUANA PETITION DRIVE PRODUCT OF CLOUDY JUDGMENT
Editor, the Tribune: Let me see if I have this right. The marijuana
possession level will be increased 700 percent, and it will be a
misdemeanor? Twenty-six hundred students represents what percentage of
University of Missouri enrollment? The only legal drugs in this country are
tobacco and alcohol. Nobody in their right mind has ever claimed that drugs
are harmless, at least not in the past 20 years or more.
I cannot smoke a cigarette at the stadium, but pot is welcome? Excuse me if
I find this all more than a little irrational. Prohibition didn't work for
alcohol, and there were a lot of bad people who profited by that. We cannot
enforce all the drug laws 100 percent and never will. On the other hand,
perhaps some of the potheads at MU would like to be introduced to the
people in the South American drug cartels who help supply their habit.
Their future would be fairly bleak under that circumstance.
Then there is the issue of driving stoned. If you don't think your reaction
time and perception are impaired by getting high, think again. Never mind
being deprived of student loans. How will you feel after killing a family
in their car who have no idea you are just having a good time?
If the Columbia City Council passes this deal, it really will be time to
clean house come next election. If the voters pass it, I will be seeking
residence somewhere inhabited by intelligent life forms.
