DRUGS PLENTIFUL IN PRISON
Illegal drugs are too easy to acquire at federal prisons, according to a
report from the Justice Department's inspector general. The report found
that nearly 3,000 federal inmates tested positive each year for illegal
substances from 1997 to 2001. About 500 inmates have died from drug
overdoses since 1997, it said. The inspector general, Glenn A. Fine, said
drugs were smuggled into the prisons by staff members and visitors and
through the mail. (NYT)
