SROS ARE IMPORTANT TO SCHOOLS

Dear Editor,

I am writing to let you know how much we appreciate our SRO (School
Resource Officer), Deputy Chip Richards, here at Crossville. I have worked
very closely with Chip during the first Semester as he taught our DARE
classes and have come to appreciate him even more. Not only is Chip our
DARE officer, but he has also been a vital member of our safety team.

The fifth grade students have really enjoyed his enthusiasm and dedication
to drug awareness and prevention. He is very eager to talk and discuss
problems that our students encounter. He is also a willing listener when
that is needed by one of the students.

The faculty members have found him very cooperative in helping us to
develop strategies for dealing with problem students. He seems to have a
special way of dealing with these students without making them become
defensive or feel threatened.

Deputy Richards's presence in our halls has lowered the number of
disturbances and fights that often spark between teenagers. He has been a
great role model and encourages our students to stay away from drugs,
alcohol, tobacco, and other destructive behaviors. He is willing to
sacrifice time spent with his family to attend ballgames and other school
functions.

It is this dedication to his job that makes the faculty and student body
feel safe in our school environment. I feel confident in saying that the
CHS faculty and students encourage Mr. Warren and the board members to
recommend that the DeKalb County Commission allow the people to vote on
this matter. Please help us keep our school safe for our children. Thank you.
