ADS CONDEMN POT YET CONDONE BEER
I was stunned and dismayed by what I saw while watching the Super
Bowl, and it had nothing to do with the game. I was reminded of my
feeling from the night before when I read The News article in which
the commercials were the focus. The amount of hypocrisy witnessed had
me and my entire Super Bowl party jumping out of our seats in outrage.
Our outrage stems from the Bush administration-backed anti-drug ads.
Specifically, we were shocked at the ad that showed parents in their
early 40s discovering that their teenage daughter was pregnant. What
shocked us was that the commercial blamed the girl's pregnancy on a
lack of good judgment caused by smoking marijuana.
Although I don't deny that her getting pregnant was indeed caused by
poor judgment, to say that marijuana is the sole reason for that poor
judgment is simply outrageous. The ad completely ignored the effects
of alcohol on an individual's judgment. While watching the Super Bowl,
one could not miss the 10 Bud, Bud Light, Miller and Coors commercials
that hammered home their products.
To blame marijuana, while welcoming four hours' worth of beer
commercials, is hypocrisy at its best. This is just another example of
how out of touch with reality the Bush administration is.
