AADAC HAS ACTIVITIES TO GIVE YOUTH A 'HIGH' WITHOUT DRUGS

Many teens feel like risk takers but there is a way to have fun and take a
risk without breaking the law.

The Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC) is bringing
excitement and an adrenaline rush to youths through a number of risk taking
activities.

Included in this spectacle is a climbing wall and two motivational media
presentations, as well as other risky activities, yet to be finalized.

"We're still in the information gathering stages but it's all coming
together and we're really excited," said AADAC coordinator Edith Zuidhof-Knoop.

The event called Do You Wanna Risk It, will be held Sat., May 3, at the
Edson and District Leisure Centre, from noon to 8 p.m. It will be aimed
mostly at junior and senior high students and its goal is to prove that
there are risks to take that can prove to be fun and free of harm.

"Instead of experimenting with drugs, alcohol or smoking, they can come and
experience the thrill of wall climbing. They can experience natural highs,"
said Zuidhof-Knoop.

The idea came from meetings last spring and suggestions from youths. The
activities came from the suggestions and the planning committee is now in
the final stages.

"The idea started with the wall and just exploded from there. And many of
the youths have been involved with the planning stages," said Zuidhof-Knoop.

The day is free of charge and many of the activities are still being finalized.

"Being a free event, I hope we can make everyone feel welcome to come out
and enjoy the day," said Zuidhof-Knoop.
