MARIJUANA USE RAMPANT, DRUG COUNSELLOR SAYS

Marijuana use in Summerland is widespread, especially among teens, a
drug counsellor says.

"Summerland youth are doing very well but this marijuana thing is out
of hand," says Jody Meyer, the alcohol and drug abuse counsellor at
the Summerland Asset Development Initiative.

Use of the drug is highest among those between 13 and 17 years of age,
he says.

For older teens, those between 17 and 19, binge drinking is more
common. Binge drinking is defined as consuming five drinks or more
within two hours.

Meyer says the community's views on drug use needs to
change.

"We have a permissive approach to drugs and alcohol," he says. "Adults
need to step up and teach their kids to take responsibility."

He explains that those who use marijuana daily or more often are
self-medicating and can develop problems as a result.

For those who use the drug less frequently, he says possession is
illegal.

Meyer says marijuana can affect the brain and impair motor skills. In
addition, side effects of marijuana use include depression, which can
lead to more frequent use.
