KEEP FUNDING FOR DRUG TREATMENT IN EASTERN KENTUCKY

As a member of a substance abuse council, I was disturbed to learn that
House Bill 269 has advanced in the General Assembly. Just when we in
Eastern Kentucky thought we were about to get much needed help with the
drug problem, the state House passed this legislation. This doesn't seem right.

First we heard that U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers and President Bush are putting
more emphasis on the drug situation in Appalachia, and we thought it was
about time. Then this bill was passed by people who are supposed to
represent us and look out for the good of our citizens.

I agree that budget cuts must be made, but I don't think anti-drug funding
should be reduced. The Herald-Leader has done a very good job showing
people some of the problems here. I fear the paper touched only on a little
of it. But at least it caused people to take more notice.

I applaud the Herald-Leader, Bush and Rogers for a job well done. I ask
that the Kentuckians tell their state representatives and senators not to
support HB 269 or any bill that cuts funding to combat substance abuse.
