ALL GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES SHOULD BE TESTED FOR DRUGS

As I read the May 12 letter from the reader in Lahaina, I almost
chuckled.

Why does this gentleman think that the teachers in our public schools
should be exempt from a random drug testing requirement as part of
their new contract? These individuals have direct daily contact with
our children.

Parents and students alike have every right to expect that teachers
are at least drug free. In this day and age, it is not so outrageous
to hold all of our state and county employees to the same kind of
standard. The same holds true for anyone holding a job of any kind in
this community.

This is not so much a violation of "rights" as it is a safeguard for
the public at large. It seems to me that only those with something to
hide are the ones who would oppose random drug testing. Unfortunately,
it is a small handful of irresponsible people who have made such
requirements necessary, as is the case with most rules, regulations
and laws that are in place across this country.
