HASHISH DEALERS GO ON STRIKE AS DENMARK CURBS SALES
Denmark -- Hashish dealers in Christiania, the Danish capital's famed
hippie enclave, closed shop Wednesday to protest a government crackdown on
sales of the drug. Hashish is illegal in Denmark, a Scandinavian country of
5.3 million, but sales in Christiania have been tolerated since the
enclave's foundation in 1971. There were no deals Wednesday inside the
mini-city. On the pocked and cracked Pusher Street, the multicolored hash
stands were empty, with plans for the 20 or so dealers to stay on strike
through Friday.
