NDLEA DESTROYS 15.5 TONNES OF INDIAN HEMP

Akure

In its bid to reduce the incidence of drug trafficking, the National Drug
Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) yesterday destroyed about 15.5 tonnes of
Indian Hemp in Akure, Ondo State.

NDLEA executive chairman, Alhaji Bello Lafiagi, who was represented by the
agency's Director General, Mr. Dave Ashang, supervised the destruction of
the drugs.

Ashang said another 376 tonnes had already been set ablaze at various farm
lands during operations in the zone.

The growing rate of weeds plantation, he said, indicated a rise in drug
business as it is alleged to be affecting the economy of the state.

Ashang said the burning of the weeds was to discourage traffickers as well
as as help the citizens focussed on cultivating cash crops to boost the
economy.

He said the state government needed to assist in the crusade against illicit
drugs, since the NDLEA could not do it alone.
