OFFICIALS AIM TO TAKE LAND FROM DRUG LORDS
BOGOTA -- The government said Thursday it wants to confiscate 750,000 acres
of farmland owned by drug lords and hand it over to peasants, stepping up a
legal offensive.
An estimated 3.5 million acres are owned by drug lords, according to the
United Nations. Most of the land was seized illegally from peasants by
right-wing militias fighting leftist rebels in a four-decade war.
Past attempts to confiscate land from drug lords have been marred by
corruption and bribes.
